Restaurant of the Week: Textile TapHaus

Residents of Atkins and surrounding Iowa communities have a new local restaurant to enjoy: Textile TapHaus. Textile TapHaus opened May 2 and is the third installment under the Textile brand, after Textile Brewing Company in Dyersville and The Corner Taproom in Cascade.

Textile TapHaus specializes in gourmet flatbreads and Bavarian pretzels larger than the average human face. Not being a stranger to craft beer, they have 24 beers on tap, including a handful from Textile and the rest from other Iowa breweries. Textile TapHaus, owned by Tom Olberding and managed by Zach Nothdorf and Preston Geerts, is on a mission to bring a gathering place to Atkins. By the looks of it on a Tuesday evening, they are doing a fantastic job at just that!

You might be wondering, “Why Atkins?” And the answer is quite simple: to improve our rural main streets. We often hear of developments in larger towns like Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, but Textile wanted to focus on its rural roots. Brian Bock is the property owner for The Corner Taproom in Cascade and the owner of the Atkins property. Bock proposed the Main Ave. location to the Textile team, and the rest is history. Rural revitalization is crucial to support our small towns. Fellow Atkins business owner Samantha Petersen, with agri-tourism attraction Bloomsbury Farms, says, “The population growth we have experienced in Atkins lately is exciting, as it brings many opportunities to our rural small town. Atkins has tremendous potential to grow into more of a destination as new food and drink establishments decide to open in this area.”

As you approach Textile TapHaus, you are greeted with floor-to-ceiling windows and a large patio with sunshade protection. Walking inside, you will immediately notice the rustic hardwood floors, Edison bulb lighting features throughout, several flat-screen televisions, a side room with two electronic dart boards and no lack of natural light. The aesthetic is the perfect fit for a casual meal out with family or friends, whether it’s a weekday dinner or weekend pitstop.

Textile TapHaus If You Brew It… corn lager

In true Textile fashion, the majority of the menu consists of several beers on tap, wine and cocktails but what is really special is the food: massive Bavarian pretzels and designer flatbreads. It’s pretty well-known that beer and pretzels pair well together so this dynamic duo of Textile TapHaus fare is a no-brainer. During our visit, we indulged in the pizza pretzel and Cowboy flatbread. The pizza pretzel is lined with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni, served with a generous cup of marinara sauce. While the pretzel is big enough for two, the dough is light and fluffy. The Cowboy flatbread is what chicken, bacon and ranch lover’s dreams are made of. The crust is soft, yet sturdy and perfectly buttered. On top, the bacon is crispy, the chicken is tender and the base is creamy and flavorful. Other flavors of pretzels include the classic, garlic parmesan, honey ham and swiss, cinnamon roll and the German, topped with swiss cheese, Canadian bacon, sauerkraut and homemade beer cheese. If the Cowboy flatbread isn’t your jam, you have plenty others to choose from including Meat Lover’s, German, spicy Italian, Mexican, BBQ and buffalo chicken.

As mentioned, Textile is known for its hops and featured at the TapHaus is its very own If You Brew It… corn lager, made from Iowa corn, marketed toward The Field of Dreams and to be sold at this year’s big game in Dyersvile. If you are looking for exclusivity, become a member of the TapHaus Mug Club which includes an 18-oz. mug, a 64-oz. glass growler plus first fill, special pricing on all mug pours, $2 off growler fills, 10 percent off food and 25 percent off merchandise.
