Favorite ways to spend your free time in IA: I love to spend time outdoors, whether hiking through the prairie and woods, or digging in my backyard flower garden. My husband, two sons and I love exploring new parks and finding the best ice cream shops.
Your biggest accomplishment and why: I graduated with a BA in Studio Art from the University of Northern Iowa, but didn’t pursue a career in art until 15 years later. My biggest accomplishment has been following my passion and establishing my art business. The first time I participated in a market event, I finally felt like I was doing what I was meant to do.
The biggest obstacle you overcame: I started my art business when my children were ages 4 and 2, while I was a stay-at-home mom. I overcame the mom guilt of taking time for myself. I realized that starting a small business and dedicating myself to something I love would positively influence my children in ways I still can’t completely see.
Someone who inspires you and why: My artist peers who are confident in their craft but always willing to learn new things and experiment inspire me to stay curious.
Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Attend events and talk to artists! Whether it’s handmade markets, art festivals, open studio events or gallery openings, figure out what feels right for you and define your goals. Meet other artists and start building your creative community.

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I love to decorate cakes and sugar cookies! I host cookie-decorating parties for the kids (and kids at heart) in the family, and we destroy the kitchen with buttercream and sprinkles. I attempt to create any themed birthday cake my sons can dream up.
