Brianne Choitz’s love for mixology is well-known (and really, well-appreciated) throughout the state of Iowa. With many years of experience under her belt—and current roles working as the general manager of Verde Contemporary in Bettendorf, and the lead cocktail creator for Davenport’s Raw— Choitz also went on to found Peachy Keen Cocktail Service (one of Iowa’s premier mobile bartending services).

Best part of working in Iowa’s mixology scene: Personally, I love getting to use humble Midwest produce and highlighting that seasonal produce by creating balanced delicious cocktails. Iowa is unassuming, and I think there are many places beginning to push the cocktail scene. It is wonderful to be a part of that beginning in Iowa. 

Go-to drink: My go-to drink is pretty simple, but a classic Supper Club Bourbon Old Fashioned. With Luxardo Cherries to spruce it up, it’s one of my favorites to make and drink! 

Best advice to an aspiring mixologist or bartender: Read, watch YouTube videos of great mixologists, and go out and drink at craft cocktail bars and soak it all up. You need to have a base knowledge of classic cocktails, and their standard ratios, in order to begin creating unique cocktails of your own. Play around, make mistakes and learn! If you take pride in your work and provide exceptional hospitality, you will do well no matter where you go.
