When you enter Fried Green Tomatoes Galena, you will be instantly taken back in time. The interior of the building is complete with exposed brick, high ceilings and old-fashioned crown molded ceilings, which give it a charming and historic atmosphere. The lighting is dim and antique chandeliers decorate the ceilings. There is a semi-private large dining room available for larger parties, along with patio seating in the back of the building. The bar is sizable and is fully stocked to craft anything you could imagine.
Locals and visitors alike flock to Fried Green Tomatoes Galena because of the outstanding service and the historic background the building offers. President Grant’s father, Jesse Grant, owned the Leather and Finding store that was located in the building in 1854. President Grant moved to Galena in 1860 to run the family business. From there, the building was home to a number of different businesses, including a funeral home and drugstore.
From seabass to lobster ravioli, the menu offers upscale variety. Guests are welcome to enjoy complimentary bread served to the table, along with a soup or salad with your main entrée. The bread is unique because it is lightly fried, served warm and topped with grated parmesan cheese, with a side of olive oil for dipping. Even though that may sound like enough to start your meal, ordering the fried green tomatoes from the appetizer menu is an absolute must–it’s what the restaurant is most known for, after all. The tomatoes are breaded and lightly fried in olive oil, served over a bed of marinara sauce and covered with cheese. You will wish there were more than four servings!
All entrees are a perfect-sized portion; you will leave full but not feeling like you overindulged. The lobster ravioli is not only an eye-catcher with the squid-ink stripes but also has creamy lobster sauce covering the pasta. The ravioli are filled with lobster and also topped with roasted vegetables and lobster chunks. Another superb dish is the garlic and spinach tortellini. This light option is served with roasted peppers and zucchini, tossed in a pesto sauce. Guests can also add protein for an extra charge. If you can, leave room for dessert at the end of your meal. Fried Green Tomatoes Galena has several delicious desserts to satisfy that sweet tooth. Choose from the house-made crème brulée, strawberry cheesecake, tiramisu or the classic French silk pie ice cream.
