Hometown: Cedar Rapids

First job: I worked as a stock boy at neighborhood grocery store.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in WAMy wife Velga and I have a part-time studio gallery in Lansing, Iowa, on the Mississippi and in arguably the most beautiful  part of Iowa. We are there about 10 days a month and during that  time we get to interact with folks from all over. We get to hear their stories and share our art. In the summer, we love to do the Maiden Voyage Friday evening music cruise on the Mississippi featuring Jon Stravers and his band Big Blue Sky.

Your biggest accomplishment and whyOver the years, I have had significant recognition for my work but what gives me great satisfaction and continued joy is my having helped to raise a son who has turned out to be a super great dad.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: Trying to make a living being a professional artist in the Midwest.

Someone who inspires you and why: I am inspired by people who often at personal cost devote their everything to causes that just need to be done for the betterment of the community, however that is defined. People who, by the strength of their commitment, are able inspire others to help get important stuff done sometimes before the community recognizes the need.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Many years ago, an older artist advised me to paint what you love and you will find a market.

Favorite quote:For years I have had three quotes on the wall in my studio. One is a quote from the artist Georgia O’Keefe: “I decided that the only thing I could that was nobody else’s business was to paint. I could do as I chose because no one would care.” From Picasso: “It takes a long time to be young! And from the artist formerly known as Prince: “When the elevator of life brings you down, go crazy. Punch a higher floor!”

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I used to be the administrator of Granger House, an historic house museum in Marion, Iowa and I’m a pretty good cook.

What makes someone fabulous: Joyful, enthusiastic, committed to something other than themselves and above all a caring heart.
