Hometown: Olin, Iowa

First job: Part-time receptionist at a hair salon (Thanks Jill for giving a 15 year old a shot!)

Favorite ways to spend your free time in IA: Heading to another Iowa community for our children’s sporting events, or exploring a park or community festival throughout the year with my family.

Your biggest accomplishment and why: Creating and growing The Local with my mom and my family has been the biggest accomplishment, yet hardest thing I have ever done. I want our customers to be proud of their hard-earned dollars and feel good about spending those dollars at our business. I feel compelled to put my best foot forward for my family, my customers and for my community, and create something that maybe has or has not been done before, and challenge myself to make it the best I can.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: We still might be in the process of overcoming, but COVID hit our business one year after we opened. Combining that with my mom (and best friend and business partner) receiving a serious health diagnosis and derecho badly damaging our personal homes, it was a mash up of business and personal obstacles to navigate through. As our business ramped back up in 2021, we did not have the staff in place to handle our business growth after working with a bare bones crew of family for 15 months. Here, I was with a business being so well supported by our customers, and I was feeling ill-equipped to handle it. But, now halfway through 2022, we are implementing systems, have an amazing staff behind us and are constantly trying to learn more, so we can do better.

Someone who inspires you and why: My kids truly inspire me. When I am questioning how well I’ve been doing as their mom, they put everything into perspective for me. They forgive easy, love unconditionally and have fun freely. Plus, I may be biased, but they are pretty cool kids!

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: I’m starting to realize that there really is no “work-life balance” for me as a small business owner. My whole heart goes into our business, so when that happens, it really becomes a part of everything. It is constantly intertwined in our home, on our kitchen table, on my mind, in our conversations and within our family’s schedule. So, instead of finding that “balance,” I’m starting to embrace the story we are creating, and try to worry less about balancing anything.

Favorite quote: “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.”

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I still almost get sick to my stomach before I announce Bingo or trivia at The Local, or before I talk on a video on social media! I’m working on it. But, I love our customers enough to just get over myself and my fear, and then I do just fine.

What makes someone fabulous: Your smile! You can give them away for free and surely make someone’s day.
