Fab Couples: Iowa

How did your love story begin? Cecilia: We met in December of 2005 at the bar (The OP) in Cedar Falls while we were both students at University of Northern Iowa. I was a single mom and my son, Dylan (8 months at the time), was at his dad’s for the night, so I decided to meet up with my friend for a few drinks. My friend’s boyfriend was also there with his roommates (Blaine being one of them). Later in the night, my friend told me that Blaine was attracted to me. Blaine eventually came up to talk to me, and we talked the rest of the night. Blaine asked if he could take Dylan and I out on a date the next night. We had our first date the following day. He grabbed Applebee’s to-go, and we ate on my apartment floor while Dylan crawled around and played. The rest is history, and now we have three additional kids (Hendrix, Lennon and Mariah).

Favorite thing about one another: Cecilia: Blaine is the most selfless and serving person I know. He never hesitates to help anyone out. Plus, he does most of the cooking, and does all of the cleaning and laundry.  People online have started calling him a unicorn…haha! He never goes a day without showing the kids and myself how much he loves us. Being a dad and husband is his No. 1 priority. It’s the simple gestures like random hugs and holding my hand when we’re walking. The sweetest thing is seeing him every morning give the kids hugs and kisses before they walk out the door to head to the bus stop and waits to shut the door until he can’t see them anymore.

Blaine: I have a lot of favorite things about Cecilia, but what I love most about Cecilia is the way she makes me have butterflies in my stomach every time I see her smile. I’m so proud of her as a mother and wife. She’s so compassionate and loving. Cecilia is always my No. 1 fan and helps me to be a better husband, father and person. She is my opposite, and I love getting her perspective on things.

Favorite date night: Life is pretty busy with four kids, but any time we get to be together is a great date.  We try to go on a date night at least once every couple of weeks. Usually it’s going out to eat at The Cheesecake Factory and then you guessed it…running errands afterwards. If we don’t have time to get out of the house, we’ll have the kids eat at the kitchen island, and we’ll sit at the dinner table together.

Favorite tradition you have as a couple: Cecilia: We both work from home so every morning, we watch “CBS Morning” and have our chat before going to our “offices” (mine is the living room and his is in the basement). Then at lunch, we alternate making avocado toast with eggs for each other. It’s a simple way of connecting that we both look forward to.

What does your happily ever after look like? Holding hands through experiences and living a simple, happy and content life. Going to church on Sundays, visiting our kids, going to our grandkids’ activities, cooking and trying out new recipes, and having a home in Iowa but going to our second home during the winter where it’s warmer.
