Hometown: Osage, Iowa

First job: Teluwut Grille House and Pub as a server.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in IA: Exploring different bars and restaurants around the state with my husband. We enjoy attending any University of Iowa athletic events. Any chance I get, I enjoy traveling back to my hometown of Osage to see my family and old friends.

Your biggest accomplishment and why: My biggest accomplishment in my eyes is moving to a new city when I was 18 years old and starting a life independently. It was a big accomplishment for me because I knew it was either sink or swim. Of course, I had wonderful parents that always had my back if I needed help, but I knew once I moved out of their house I needed to grow up. There were struggles along the way, but I am a homeowner now, I manage two successful establishments in the Iowa City area, I am married to the man of my dreams, and we are living a life we have always wanted.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: The biggest obstacle I have overcame definitely has to be completing cosmetology school. It took a lot of hard work, dedication and focus to attend and finish out my schooling while also managing a sports bar. The structure of cosmetology school taught me structure in my work life as well.

Someone who inspires you and why: The first person that comes to mind when asked who inspires me is my Grandmother Frieda. She was an immigrant from Germany who had met my grandfather while he was in the army, stationed in her hometown. She had moved to the US with him when she was only 19 years old and started a life of her own here without any family. She made a successful career for herself and overcame many challenges along the way.  She inspired me to be the independent, hard worker I am today.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Be prepared to put a lot of time and hard work into the business. It is worth it in the end.

Favorite quote: “Kill them with kindness.” This is a quote that my boss at my very first job had said to me, and it’s stuck with me ever since.

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I am a licensed cosmetologist.

What makes someone fabulous: To me, a fabulous person has the qualities of making a friend out of anyone. A fabulous person is kind, genuine, honest, respectful and all-around someone people gravitate towards.
