After its first opening in 1854, the Iowa State Fair has become an award-winning, annual tradition–not just for Iowans, but for visitors across the globe. The fair will take place August 12 to August 22 in Des Moines with more than a million people expected in attendance.
Known as the Second Best State Fair according to USA Today, the Iowa State Fair is a must to visit. The grounds house one of the world’s largest livestock shows, the state’s largest art exhibit and more than 900 culinary classes and events. In addition, there is a multitude of exhibits to explore and approximately 200 concession stands are filled to the brim with treats, drinks and all the fried food your heart desires.
Plus, Iowa State Fair will have rides for all ages and adventure levels, from Thrill Town for the littlest fair-goers to Thrill Zone for those seeking heart-thumping action.
This year, some of music’s most beloved acts take the Grandstand stage, including Blake Shelton (August 13), Sam Hunt (August 14), Boyz II Men (August 15), The Beach Boys (August 17) and Chris Stapleton (August 19). In addition to these ticketed performances, there will be plenty of free entertainment to enjoy from Niko Moon, Lit, Blanco Brown, Jake Hoot, Skid Row, Color Me Badd and much more.
For those wanting to stay at the fair and not miss a single event, the fair offers over 160 acres of land for camping, with incredible views of Iowa wildflowers and decades-old oak and walnut trees. The grounds offer comfortable accommodations to assist in your stay, including showers, electrical and water hook-ups, restrooms and even private office spaces. The camping accommodation is only available to those staying all 11 days.
Admission starts at $14 for those ages 12 and up; $8 for ages 5 to 12; and admission is free for children under 5. Each ticket is access for one day at the state fair.
